Monthly Home Maintenace Tasks
When it comes to home maintenance it can be hard to know where to start. Keeping your home maintained will save you money and stress in the long run. Whether you have fallen behind on your home or just moved to a new house, these are 5 simple tasks you can do each month to keep your house in good working condition.
1. Clean HVAC Filters and Vents
Change your HVAC filters monthly (or per your HVAC system requirements) and vacuum around your vents. This keeps your HVAC system from becoming stuffed with dust, dirt, hair, and allergens. Vacuum your vents to keep them clean. These two tasks will help your HVAC work optimally and make the air in your home healthier.
2. Clean Your Drains
When was the last time your drains were cleaned? Are they draining slowly? You will be surprised by the amount of hair and soap that has collected. After removing hair and debris, simply pour half a cup of baking soda or 2 tbsp. Dawn dish soap into your drain and flush with hot water. You might even consider installing a drain hair trap to making cleaning easier.
3. Clean Your Appliances
Appliances should be cleaned and maintained to keep them in good working order. Clean the inside and outside of your dishwasher and clothes washer, making sure to clean any filters. Vacuum your dryer vent and refrigerator coils. Deep clean your refrigerator, making sure to keep your eye out for any leaks. Clean your stove, oven, microwave, and range hood filter to keep your home smelling fresh. Simply use hot water, Dawn dish soap, and baking soda as needed.
4. Clean Your Garbage Disposal
If left dirty, garbage disposals grow stinky, or worse, they can grow mildew or mold. To prevent this, you should clean it at least weekly. Pour hot water and a bit of Dawn dish soap in while running your disposal. Freeze used citrus peels and run them in your garbage disposal weekly. This will make your kitchen smell fresh.
5. Check for Leaks
To prevent water damage to your house, you should check for leaks monthly. If leaks remain for even a little while, you could grow mold/mildew or have water damage to repair down the road. This is also a good time to check caulking around sinks and tubs/showers and repair if needed.
If you get into the habit, these tasks can become quick and easy to perform each month. Once you complete these items, it’s the perfect time to tackle quarterly or bi-annual home maintenance.
